This is an excellent midweek 4 night break. First cruise down the pretty Macclesfield Canal to Kidsgrove Junction, where you meet the Trent & Mersey Canal, here you will find the extraordinary Harecastle Tunnel(3000 yards in length) which is ventilated by a giant fan.
Passing through the tunnel you will pass through our famous ‘Potteries’ so called due to the area’s fame for pottery manufacture ever since the industrial revolution. Just after Stoke On Trent, turn left onto the peaceful and scenic Caldon Canal, with just a few locks on the way to it’s end at Froghall Wharf… Here you can get off the boat and if you wish to, you can take a taxi to Alton Towers, which is very close by and spend a day there (an excellent idea if you have children with you). There is also a 2 mile diversion to explore the lock free Leek Branch of the canal.
The Caldon Canal is 33 miles / 16 locks each way / approx. 22 hours return
